On a recent trip to the historical Wicklow Gaol i came upon a couple of pieces of equipment that was used to torture the prisoners. Apart from a restricted diet they were made to do exercise as punishment. Punishment for stealing a loaf of bread or being a United Irishman or Woman.
One piece resembled a kettlebell, the 9 pounder, the prisoner had to pick it up off the ground the chest height, walk a couple of paces and set it down. Then they could repeat this meaningless task for up to 4 hours, reminds me of some mindless repetition classes!
The other piece resembled the modern treadmill or step machine, where the prisoners were worked to exhaustion. Very sad but historical place where children were incarcerated too. If you are interested in Irelands history, visit Wicklow Gaol.
